summary
During President Eisenhower's presidency, he had created foreign policies around nuclear weapons. This policy included brinkmanship, which was getting to the brink of war without it happening. The Soviet Union had created the Warsaw Pact to become military allies with other Eastern European countries. After the Atomic Bomb, the Americans created the Hydrogen Bomb and the Soviets got their hands on the blueprints for the Hydrogen Bomb. The U.S. and Soviet Union had stocked up on nuclear weapons which would also be known as the "Arms Race". Then missiles were created called ICBMs that could send them thousands of miles across the world. After Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy was elected President from 1961 to 1963. Invasion of Cuba, also known as Bay of Pigs Invasion, started during Kennedys first days as president. The invasion was a failure and Cuba grew closer to the Soviet Union. The Cuban Missile Crisis began in October 1963 when the U.S. had found out that the U.S.S.R. had put missiles in Cuba. The Soviet Union had agreed to take the missiles out of Cuba as long as the U.S. promised to not invade Cuba. On November 22, 1963, Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald while trying to campaign his election in Texas. Vice President Johnson had then became President after the assassination. President Johnson moved towards positive actions in society by passing many programs such as Job Corps, VISTA, Medicaid, and Medicare. His Johnson Doctrine stated the United States had a right to step in an stop any Communists dictatorship. The temporary division between North and South Vietnam became a big conflict seeing as the North were communists. Johnson acted on this by giving congress wrong information about a U.S. ship being fired on so they passed the Tonkin Gulf Resolution giving Johnson more war power. President Johnson had announced in 1968 that he would not run for re-election so Nixon had won presidency. President Nixon had began with drawing troops from because of the policy of Vietnamization; the turn over of war to the South of Vietnam. He al ordered bombings to North Vietnam and Cambodia, secretly expanding the war. In the end the Vietnam war killed 1,000,000 plus Vietnamese, while 50,000 plus Americans were killed with 300,000 injured. Congress then passed the War Powers Act in 1973 to limit the presidents powers on creating war.
Media Used During This Time
During president Kennedys campaign and presidency, he used the media very well to portray himself as an athletic and somewhat out going president. Since he was one of the youngest presidents to ever be elected, he had to portray himself as young and healthy when in actuality he was not. It was the perfect time for Kennedy to portray himself in the media because at this time in technology the television was invented and every home had one. These televisions were not all black and white, but some also had already colored television. In this picture from an advertisement, we see President Kennedy being portrayed as athletic with the gestures of him running and catching a football.
